Frills & Thrills First Birthday

365 days, 52 weeks, 12 months...is it one year already?

I am not the ceremonial type, but I think 'mentioning' that today is my first blog birthday doesn't steep too deep into the pool of vanity. My dream of being a fashion designer never materialized, so I figured that those who can't sew, blog. Frills & Thrills sums up the two things I am most passionate about - fashion and writing. Upon seeing my blog for the first time, people who know me personally say "It's so you!" Initially, I had no idea how to regard this overused phrase, but over the year, I've formed a clearer idea of what it means.

Frills & Thrills is personal extension of who I am. A lover of pink (in refined moderation), an admirer of fashion (from runway to red carpet), the girliest of girls, a devisor of words, and a teller of tales. All this served up with a spark of enthusiasm, a spoonful of sarcasm and a sprinkling of fairy dust from the closets of Vogue. I may only have the smallest bit of space on the World Wide Web, but it is a space that's I am delighted to call my own.

So thank you to my friends and family for your unconditional support and encouragement. I am always elated at receiving your calls, emails or smses about something you've seen and liked here on Frills & Thrills. And most importantly, thanks to you, reading this right now. Even if you've stopped by just once, whether you're in transit to some place else, or if you're a regular reader...I am so thrilled to have you visit this frilly space I call home. I don't like the word 'Follower', because in order to be 'followed', one would have to be a leader. And that I am not. Instead, I consider you to be a good friend with whom I can share my thoughts, views and perceptions on all things style-bound and fashion-able.

Here's to the very first Frills & Thrills birthday! I will now proceed to cut the virtual pink vanilla cake and share a piece with all of you. The best thing about it? No added calories ;)

Tokyo tops out Paris again as world food capital

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents Tokyo tops out Paris again as world food capital.

Tokyo has now more Michelin three star restaurants than Paris, according to the latest edition of the gastronomical guide.

Japan as a whole also beats France, with 32 establishments granted the maximum grade, against 25 in the guide’s home country. Paris has just 10 three star eateries.

Of Tokyo’s 160,000 restaurants, 16 were awarded top marks, 52 got two stars and 179 were deemed worthy of one star by the authors of the Red Guide.

While most of those included in the book serve Japanese food, a Korean restaurant was awarded two stars, while two French restaurants got top honours.

A guide to western Japan released last month propelled the country into the world top spot for haute cuisine, with 15 top rated restaurants in cities including Kyoto, Osaka, Kobe and the former capital Nara.

“Japan is a unique country with many cities full of high level cuisine,” said Bernard Delmas, president of Michelin in Tokyo, last month.

“This is why, though we reach the fifth anniversary of the arrival of the Michelin guide in Japan, we continue to discover new stars to introduce to our readers.”

The Daily Mail Designs the Queen’s Next Yacht

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents The Daily Mail Designs the Queen’s Next Yacht.

A campaign, in the London Daily Mail, is afoot to build a new megayacht for the Queen of England and the British Royal Family .

Their previous vessel, the 412 ft. Royal Brittania built in 1953, was retired in 1997.

Codenamed FSP21 (Future Ship Project 21st Century), the 515-ft. vessel would be the third largest in the world, after those of Roman Abramovich and the ruler of Dubai.

The yacht, which would have all the latest in technology and a plethora of ultra-luxury offerings, would cost $125 million financed from private and corporate sources.

The proposed craft would be able to carry a helicopter, a miniature submarine, sailboat, two buses, bicycles, and an underwater laboratory to be used by the Royal Navy.

Current design plans have the Windsor’s new vessel as a four masted square-rigged barque with solar capability and an auxiliary diesel electric power plant.

It may all be a newspaper editor’s pipe dream… but you never know! – Via Jameslist

Official: 2012 Honda CR-Z iCF Mugen

Honda UK has announced the 2012 CR-Z iCF Mugen.

The Honda CR-Z iCF will boast a little over 172 horsepower thanks to some wrenching by Mugen Euro. The base 1.5-liter four-cylinder engine packs a centrifugal supercharger along with an intercooler and a remapped ECU.

The end result is a greatly improved power to weight ratio, as evidenced by a new 0-60 mph time of just 6.1 seconds--a full 3.0 seconds faster than the regular model.

The Honda CR-Z iCF Mugen price will start at 24,000 GBP, and the first exemplars will be available for test drives through the eight Honda UK MUGEN dealers starting from Spring 2012.

HONDA (UK) LINKS WITH MUGEN EURO TO LAUNCH HOT "CR-Z iCF"

Following a successful programme launch at Goodwood Festival of Speed 2011, Honda (UK) has joined forces with "MUGEN Euro", to launch a 130+mph sports hybrid CR-Z, boasting Civic Type R performance.

With almost 50 per cent more power than the standard car, this 175 PS 'pocket rocket' hybrid marks the strengthening of the engineering partnership between Honda (UK) and MUGEN Euro following the limited edition Civic Type R MUGEN in 2010.

MUGEN Euro engineers 'breathed over' the 1.5-litre power unit, retaining the 3-button IMA modes, adding a centrifugal forced air induction system, charge-air cooler and induction system and importantly, a MUGEN Euro-mapped ECU. The result is outstanding power to weight, and increased torque helping to deliver 0-62mph in 6.1 seconds - over 3 seconds quicker than the standard car.

Martin Moll, Head of Honda (UK) marketing said, "MUGEN Euro magic has created a super responsive yet eco-conscious model building on our sporting credentials and giving us the ability to compete in the "hot hatch" marketplace as we move into 2012."

Production development continues at MUGEN Euro, with cars available for test drive through the eight Honda UK MUGEN dealers in spring 2012. Prices have yet to be confirmed, but are expected to be approximately £24,000.

Who Wore Proenza Schouler Better?

Who Wore It Better?
Proenza Schouler Fall 2011 Dress

I first saw this kaleidoscopic jigsaw print Proenza Schouler dress on 6 June this year, when Liv Tyler wore it to the CFDA Fashion Awards in New York City. Liv represented the Proenza Schouler fashion brand at the awards show, where the team took home the award for 'Womenswear Designer of the Year'. Five months later, style darling Olivia Palermo was spotted on the streets of NYC wearing the same dress. It's interesting to see that Olivia would wear this dress on a random day out, while Liv savoured it for the red carpet.

Olivia Palermo takes a moment to pose in the puzzle print halter neck dress. She wore a long black coat over it, with ankle boots by Bakers Flare.
Liv Tyler wore the belted dress as it was seen on the catwalk. The folded detail on the front of the dress is more visible on her. She carried a black clutch and stood in strappy heels, both by Proenza Schouler.
Canadian model Kelsey van Mook walked the runway in the multicoloured silk dress, wearing it with black multi-strap sandals.

I prefer this look on Olivia, simply because of her styling. The print and colours are very bold and I think she simmered it down well with the black coat and boots. What are your thoughts?

The Best Advice Ever Received

Some Good Advice

From the Friendship Files

We're constantly getting advice from the people around us, regarding different things. But there'll always be one special piece of advice that we treasure above all the rest. Heartfelt words that someone has said to us which struck a note, inspired a dream or changed our lives for the better. Today, my friends and I share the best advice we've ever been given.

What Is The Best Advice You've Ever Received?

*When ever I'm afraid to try something new, my best friend always says to me, "You have nothing to lose. Nothing ventured, nothing gained."

*Some opportunities only come around once, seize them so as to avoid a life of regret.

*Don't walk away from negative people - RUN!

*"No one can diminish you but yourself". A friend said this to me and it's my favourite advice.

*Forget all the negative comments people give you. Cherish the compliments.

*You're not always going to be the skinniest, smartest or prettiest girl in the room. But don't let that intimidate you. Take the best of what you have and learn to work with it.

*Chocolate is the cure to everything!

*Don't try so hard to fit in. Your differences make you stand out. How will you make your mark in the world if you're exactly like everyone else.

*My mother said to me, "Remember that one day may be hard but the next day gets better.' Those words have carried me through the toughest moments in my life.

*Don't lose hope if you fail at something. Next time, just have more faith and work harder. But most importantly, make sure that there is a 'next time'.

*Listen to your parents, they always know best. (This was said to me by my parents, naturally).

*A lecturer once said to us in class, "Don't ever be afraid to ask questions. If you don't ask, you will never know. A curious mind is the key to a better education."

*If the shoe fits, buy two pairs!

*I was told: sometimes in difficult times or tasks you have moments when you think you can't do this, it's too much. Just hang on, those moments will pass and you will look back from a better place & think - lucky I didn't give up because its all ok now & so worth it...and it will be.

*Be thankful for all that you have because there's always someone out there who has less than you and who will give anything to be in your shoes.

*I've realised in life, that nothing worth anything is easy to come by...nothing. You have to work at it or for it.

*Don't sit around and wait for something great to happen to you. Get off that couch and make it happen yourself.

*Don't change for anyone, if they can't accept you for who you are then they certainly don't deserve you.

*The most important asset a girl has is her reputation. Its like having a flawless complexion - once its scarred it will always be there every time you look in the mirror.

*Be true to yourself, only then will you enjoy life.

*A work colleague told me, "Your career isn't everything. Make time for your family, friends & self. Because at the end of the day, if things get tough, who's more likely to be there for you?"

*Live each day like it was your last.

*If you don't believe in yourself no one else will, so stop feeling sorry for yourself, dream big and you will achieve much.

*Never judge others because you don't know when you will be in their shoes.

*Leave the past where it is...in the past.

*The best advice I've ever received is from my friend, who told me, "Don't cut yourself short. If you don't have respect and appreciation for yourself, no one else will."

*"Everything you get out of life is what you've settled for." This taught me to not to settle for less than I deserve.

Thanks to all my friends for passing on their favourite bits of advice to us.

Dear Lovely Reader, I would love for you to also share the best advice you've ever received.

New Prada Phone by LG 3.0 for 2012

The luxury Lifestyle blog (the home of luxury Lifestyle) presents New Prada Phone by LG 3.0 for 2012.

LG and fashion label Prada are collaborating for the third time to release the first LG Prada smartphone, the Prada phone by LG 3.0.

The first LG Prada, also known as LG KE850, was the world’s first mobile phone to use a touchscreen display.

The teams behind the design and construction have offered a sneak peek into the handset that will be on offer next fall via an image released by the company.

Neither of the two concerned companies has revealed any information on the upcoming LG Prada phone.

Dr. Jong-seok Park, CEO of LG Eletronics Mobile Communications Company, said, “Our working relationship with PRADA is unique in its longevity and success, something no other phone company and luxury brand have been able to replicate.”

Designer labels attached to phones is not a novelty these days considering the Hugo Boss Samsung Galaxy Ace or the BlackBerry Porsche Design P’9981 devices.

Looks Of The Week

A round-up of my favourite (and not) outfits of the week.

Cocktail Wear

Blake Lively was suited up in Elie Saab for the "Gaga Holiday Workshop' at Barneys. The tall blonde sizzled in a bright blue suit with lace shoulder detail. She may be missing a shirt, but still manages to pull it off with poise.
Nicole Richie wears a loose-fitting Halston dress, fully coated in silver sequins with flashes of red. Her matching red clutch, jewellery and heels are from her own line, House of Harlow.
Rosie Huntington-Whiteley was in Paris for the opening of Marks & Spencer. The model wore a black and white colour blocked dress by Autograph for Marks & Spencer. So chic & clean. There's nothing much to this dress, but she makes it look far more than it's worth.

Street Style

Daisy Lowe in her hometown of London wearing a red and white tie-up shirt, black zip jacket and cropped grey schoolboy trousers. She added a large red tote and black biker boots.

Taylor Swift strolls New York City in a navy blue Ralph Lauren cable-knit sweater, paired with a mustard pleated skirt by ModCloth. She carries a blue Fendi bag, with ruby slippers by Marc by Marc Jacobs. Got to love her unique colour combination.

Pippa Middleton takes her sophisticated style to the streets of London, wearing a black and grey tweed coat, over a feminine cream lace shift. Black tights, a nude quilted bag and ballet flats complete her work-day outfit.

Evening Wear

Doutzen Kroes attended a movie premiere in Amsterdam, wearing an extraordinary ebony gown by Giambattista Valli. The strapless bodice is lined with bows, while the sizable skirt is covered in layers of tiny ruffles. As huge as it is, I don't feel that the dress overwhelms her.
Kristen Cavallari impressed me with her choice of evening gown for California's Marine Corps Ball. The reality star looked stunning in a vanilla mint strapless pleated gown by Maria Lucia Hohan. She accented her waist with a shiny gold Chloe belt.
Gillian Anderson (who I haven't seen in ages) is fine example of simple sophistication in a pristine white gown with pockets and belt, which is vintage Christian Dior.

Crimes of Style

I know Blake Lively is on my best dressed list, but this fringed affair pulled the rug from right under me. Fringing in moderation is fine, but this superfluous shroud is too much, even for a cabaret dancer. Sorry Blake, I love your style (on most occasions) but not this one.

Yasmin Le Bon in a see-through sequined artifact, trimmed with orange PVC. It's so disjointed and if that's a genuine fur coat (which I suspect it is), then I loathe this look even more.

Jessica Szhor, what happened from last week to this? There's enough fabric on her sleeves to make a whole other dress, maybe two.

A Triple Shot of "Who Wore It Better?"

It has been a week of repeats in the land of the famous and fashionable. Six celebrities, three different dresses. Who started the trend and who followed? Let's have a look.

Who Wore Thomas Wylde Better?

Firstly, we have two singing stars wearing the same dress by Thomas Wylde. The black silk dress has a pleated asymmetrical shoulder, decked with matching stones.
Left: X-Factor judge Nicole Scherzinger opted to wear the LBD to the GQ 'Men of the Year' awards last week. She paired it with black peep-toe pumps and a high ponytail.
Right: It was Miley Cyrus who wore the dress first - all the way back in March 2010. The teen actress donned the dress for the premiere of her movie 'The Last Song'. She added Salvatore Ferragamo heels and an updo. Both ladies wore arm jewellery.

My Verdict: I like Nicole in this dress, she fills it out better and the shoulder pleats seem to set better on her.

Who Wore Chagoury Couture Better?

Left: Heroes actress Hayden Panettiere wore this crimson dress with strapless sweetheart necklace by Chagoury Couture on November 17, for the 'Robert Verdi Jewellery' event in New York City. Hayden mixed it up with a black leather biker jacket, a few necklaces and black suede Christian Louboutin boots. She wore her hair up with a slight tease.
Right: Canadian actress Laura Vandervoort first wore the little red cocktail dress in June of this year, to the premiere of the 'Green Lantern' in LA. She elegantly paired it with a nude clutch bag and peep-toe heels. Laura had her hair done in a neat ponytail.

My Verdict: I prefer this dress worn simply, as on Laura.

Who Wore Versace for H&M Better?

Left: Chinese megastar Fan Bingbing adds her own unique twist to this black and gold ensemble by Versace for H&M. She wore it to the 'Chen Man Photography Exhibition' in Shanghai on 23 November. A winged biker Jeremy Scott for Adidas jacket, chauffeur's hat and wide-rimmed glasses complete her look.
Right: We recently saw Jessica Alba wear the same studded top and skirt by Versace for H&M, at the label's launch party on 8 November 2011 in New York. Both ladies opted to wear black tights and heels with their matching outfits.

My Verdict: I have a preference for simplicity this week, so I am choosing Jessica's look as my favourite.

Who do you think wore each of these looks better?

Tokyo Motor Show: Volkswagen Passat Alltrack

https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEikZcNfXagwvrP4qfeK2UQnDA7cDE6gwOnnuLWG3MHKDrsTzbD3tMhecz4y9XAuBA9cWdgDbU7w0vXK75BnnRikC8BUfyooJAuBrxy14wzfPUuWX4uvCfQ8NTW36leq3aVyK3RI7_vAcbw/s1600/VW-PASSAT-ALLTRACK-7.jpg

Volkswagen has releases the new Passat Alltrack, which will debut at the Tokyo Motor show next week. The Volkswagen Passat Alltrack will come equipped with all-wheel drive as standard in the UK and will sit between the Passat estate and the Tiguan in VW’s line-up.

VW claims the Alltrack has genuine off-road capabilities, something emphasised with both its styling and equipment. The visual changes include a new design for the front and rear bumpers inspired by the Tiguan and Touareg SUVs and flared wheel arches wrapped in black plastic cladding. Despite the changes, the Alltrack’s length and width are identical to the Passat estate’s at 4771mm and 1820mm respectively.

The new Volkswagen Passat Alltrack is going to be offered with two turbocharged direct injection petrol engines (one with 160 PS / 118 kW and the other rated at 210 PS / 155 kW) and two turbodiesels (TDI) capable of delivering 140 PS / 103 kW or 170 PS / 125 kW.

The range kicks off with the 138bhp six-speed manual version, while there will also be a 168bhp model with a six-speed DSG automatic transmission. Just the one, highly specified, trim level will be available, which comes with Alcantara suede, two-zone climate control, cruise control, tyre pressure sensors, an iPod dock, Bluetooth and 18-inch alloys.

Prices will be revealed soon and order books open in April, with deliveries expected by late summer.

Passat Alltrack unites passenger car and SUV worlds

Passat Alltrack has higher ground clearance and new off-road design

Wolfsburg, 23 November 2011 - Over the past four decades, well over 15 million Passat cars have been built. Along with its favourable all-round qualities, the success of the bestseller - which is sold on all of the world's continents - can be attributed to the Passat's wide and diverse range of versions. Now, Volkswagen is extending the model series with another specialist: the Passat Alltrack.

This new version is offered in an estate car configuration, and it closes the gap between the conventional Passat Estate and SUVs such as the Tiguan. The rationale here: many car drivers who use their car as a towing vehicle, or in light off-road situations, want a versatile, sporty and very roomy passenger car that has rugged qualities. Volkswagen developed the Passat Alltrack for this clientele. In comparison with the familiar Passat Estate, the new model is defined by new bumpers in SUV style - with wheel well and side sill flares. Its greater off-road ramp angle, approach angle, departure angle and higher ground clearance all make the Passat Alltrack an excellent SUV alternative for driving on unpaved track.

Two turbocharged direct injection petrol engines (TSI) with 118 kW / 160 PS and 155 kW / 210 PS and two turbodiesels (TDI) - also with direct injection - with 103 kW / 140 PS and 125 kW / 170 PS are available in the Passat Alltrack. The two most powerful Alltrack versions, the 170 PS TDI and the 210 PS TSI, have standard 4MOTION all-wheel drive and a dual clutch transmission (DSG). For the Passat Alltrack with a 140 PS TDI, Volkswagen will offer all-wheel drive as an option. Just how efficiently the engines of the Passat Alltrack operate together with the intelligently controlled 4MOTION all-wheel drive system is illustrated by the two TDI engines: the 140 PS version has a low combined fuel consumption of 5.7 l/100 km (equivalent to 150 g/km CO2), while fuel consumption for the 170 PS version is 5.8 l/100 km (152 g/km CO2). The Alltrack will debut in a world premiere at the Tokyo Motor Show (03 to 11 December); market launch for the new versatile Alltrack begins in early 2012.
