The MINI Cooper SD, due for launch in spring 2011, will be the most powerful diesel variant yet in the MINI line-up. The new 2.0-litre engine developing 105 kW/143 hp - available for the MINI, MINI Clubman, MINI Convertible and MINI Countryman - will drum up even more power yet burn extremely small amounts of fuel. Motor sport enthusiasts will welcome the new John Cooper Works Pack option also on offer for the MINI and MINI Convertible. Furthermore, the customary selection of personalisation options available for drivers to configure their MINI in their own image has taken on even greater proportions. The newly developed MINI Yours product range offers a host of extremely attractive customisation options. The first ambassador of the exclusive and innovative MINI Yours style will be the MINI Clubman Hampton special edition. MINI Cooper SD: Impressive on the power, frugal at the pumps. The new MINI Cooper SD slots into the range above the MINI One D with 66 kW/90 hp and MINI Cooper D developing 82 kW/112 hp as the most powerful diesel MINI. Its 2.0-litre four-cylinder turbodiesel unit produces maximum output of 105 kW/143 hp at 4,000 rpm. A stand-out characteristic of the new diesel is its mighty pulling power, which remains on tap even under heavy loads; maximum torque of 305 Newton metres (225 lb-ft) is available between 1,750 and 2,700 rpm. Add this to the excellent balance between output and fuel consumption familiar from the other models in the MINI family plus extraordinary power development for a four-cylinder engine, and the MINI Cooper SD has all the tools the sporty driver could ever need. In the MINI Countryman this extra-sporty diesel engine teams up with either front-wheel drive or the all-wheel-drive system MINI ALL4. The MINI Cooper SD Countryman sprints from 0 to 100 km/h (62 mph) in 9.3 seconds, the MINI Cooper SD Countryman ALL4 in 9.4 seconds, on the way to top speeds of 198 and 195 km/h (123/121 mph) respectively. The models fitted with the new diesel powerplant come as standard with a six-speed manual gearbox, whose ratios are tuned carefully to the engine's performance characteristics to enable powerful and silky smooth acceleration. A ready-to-drive weight of 44.8 kilograms (98.7 lb) makes this the lightest gearbox of its kind. Added to which, it sets a new benchmark in the MINI segment with its short shift travel and impressively precise action. A six-speed automatic gearbox will also be available from launch as an option. Its exceptionally short shift times and direct "target gear" finding capability on downshifts also allow the automatic to enhance the sporting character of the MINI Cooper SD. In the interests of delivering the optimum combination of engine and gearbox, these models will also be powered by a 2.0-litre diesel unit. This variant matches the output and torque of the 1.6-litre engine in the model variants with manual gearbox. The black border around the lower part of the body is highlighted particularly clearly at the front and rear by a centrally positioned indentation. The inner section of the surrounds for the positioning lights or foglamps on the outer edges of the front apron feature horizontal slats. Plus, the radiator grille has the same honeycomb structure as the lower air intake. The side skirts continue the dynamic thread, curving inwards with a sweeping flourish and adding a stylised opening at the rear. As part of the aerodynamics package features, the powerfully formed rear apron includes prominent cut-outs at its outer edges which mimic the appearance of the positioning light and foglamp surrounds integrated into the front apron. The 17-inch weight-optimised light-alloy wheels in John Cooper Works Cross Spoke CHALLENGE design ensure the best possible contact with the road. Moreover, the John Cooper Works Pack comes with the traction mode DTC (Dynamic Traction Control) added to the standard-fitted stability system DSC (Dynamic Stability Control), as well as EDLC (Electronic Differential Lock Control) - the electronically controlled locking function for the driven axle differential. DTC mode, which is activated at the touch of a button, raises the intervention thresholds of the stability control technology, making it easier to pull away on loose sand or snow with a degree of wheel spin. The John Cooper Works Tuning Kit includes a model-specific sports silencer with chrome tailpipes, which optimises the exhaust gas discharge and gives the engine sound a particularly sporting note. It is available for retrofitting on all relevant models with manual gearbox produced since March 2010. It meets the MINI brand's high standards of quality and safety in terms of both design and engineering and is retrofitted, like all John Cooper Works accessories components, by authorised MINI Service Partners. This means that the car's warranty will remain unaffected. Another new addition to the John Cooper Works accessories range is the 18-inch Cross Spoke Red Stripe light-alloy wheel variant, which will also be available from spring 2011. The black wheel features the innovative addition of a red trim strip on the wheel rim. Endowed with hours, minutes, seconds and minute repeater functions and equipped with a winding system specially developed for its hand-wound Calibre 2910, the Millenary Minute Repeater – like its illustrious forerunners – is a concentrated blend of expertise, technical sophistication and innovative materials. Its titanium oval case provides an atypical stage-setting for a truly magnificent sight featuring offset gold subdials inviting the observer to plunge into the mechanism’s deepest secrets. The AP escapement, the double balance-spring, as well as the hammers and the striking gongs, all become the key players of a truly three-dimensional creation. The striking mechanism is the oldest of all complications. As early as the 15th century, certain pocket-watches already sounded the hours in passing, whereas quarter-repeating mechanisms striking the hours and quarters on demand appeared in the late 17th century. These watches endowed with a mechanical memory and which initially served to tell the time in the dark are now one of the greatest demonstrations of horological expertise, and the exclusive preserve of a few rare movement manufacturers. A complication inscribed in the brand genes At the time of its founding in 1875, Audemars PIguet already made minute repeater and Grande Sonnerie (or grand strike) models. As time went by, it added other complications, such as a perpetual calendar and a chronograph, as well as a power-reserve indication in 1885. The experience thus acquired enabled it to make the first minute repeater wristwatch in 1892. This masterpiece of miniaturization lastingly inscribed this complication in the brand’s genes, to the extent that in the late 1980s, when there was no more research on these models that had sadly fallen into oblivion, Audemars Piguet became one of the first manufacturers to revive this genre. The new Millenary Minute Repeater is entirely in line with this longstanding tradition, while adopting the latest technological breakthroughs developed by Audemars Piguet, starting with the new AP escapement. As an essential component in the smooth running of a watch, the escapement serves to sequence the linear energy transmitted by the barrel. Drawing inspiration from a mechanism created in the late 18th century by a watchmaker named Robin, Audemars Piguet developed a new escapement combining the high efficiency of a direct-impulse escapement with the reliability of a Swiss lever escapement. The watchmakers in Le Brassus thereby succeeded in reducing the energy losses and in eliminating the need to lubricate the pallet-stones. This groundbreaking technical development in turn enhanced rating accuracy, long-term stability and shock-resistance. A sophisticated device Conceived, developed and produced by Audemars Piguet, the new hand-wound Calibre 2910 driving the Millenary Minute Repeater is also distinguished by the atypical construction of the regulating organ. The latter is composed, not of one balance-spring, but of two balance-springs placed top to tail. This flat opposite-facing double balance-spring system boasts numerous advantages: it ensures automatic compensation for potential poising flaws; eliminates the need for the “overcoil” terminal curves of so-called “Breguet-type” balance-springs, which are always very tricky to make; and also does away with the imprecision resulting from the vertical position of the watch without needing to resort to such a sophisticated device as the tourbillon. All these special features serve to ensure finer adjustment of the balance-and-spring assembly oscillating at a frequency of 21,600 vibrations per hour. The two movement barrels guarantee an exceptional seven-day power reserve. A third barrel dedicated to the striking mechanism is two and a half times larger than normal, and enhances the regularity of the note. Finally, in terms of security, the Millenary Minute Repeater is equipped with a balance-stop system designed to ensuring time-setting that is accurate to the nearest second. The new winding system also features a security device that prevents time-setting while the striking mechanism is in operation, thus avoiding any risk of inappropriate handling. Dynamic three-dimensional architecture Such refined mechanical features naturally deserved to be matched by equally exceptional finishing. The oval-shaped Millenary case in brushed titanium – a material featuring exceptional resonance qualities – is framed by a polished titanium bezel. The various organs within are barely concealed by the anthracite grey hours and minutes subdial offset at 3 o’clock, and by the small seconds at 7 o’clock. Particular care has been lavished on the hand-polished bevelling, on the interior angles and on the concentric circular-grained motif. The movement is also adorned by a horizontal “Côtes de Genève” pattern. This wealth of details is visible both from the top and through the transparent caseback, which together serve to highlight a particularly dynamic three-dimensional architecture. Prada SS11 is quite unordinary compared to the season’s trend of all-white show openers. Prada surprises us with bright orange, hot pink, lime green and fluorescent yellow (setting the tone for the new big trend of neon color!). Also, while many designers have looked to the ’70s for spring 2011, Prada’s color palette was the only thing remotely ’70s-inspired. The collection reminded us of Mexico, Brazil and maybe even Puerto Rico because of its form-fitting dresses with drop-waist ruffles that were simply to die for! We also love the oversized striped sombreros. We are thrilled that we finally have a spring collection that is just so much fun and that being said: It’s hard to pin this collection to any distinct decade because it was so modern and bright and forward-thinking. John Galliano gave haute couture a breath of fresh air with the debut of Christian Dior Spring Couture Collection 2011. Galliano brought the new "it" factor, 3D, to his clothes in a remarkable way. Channeling the artistry of acclaimed fashion illustrator, Rene Gruau, Galliano found a way to make all of his garments pop on the runway. Each piece mirroring the fashion illustration from which it was inspired. He added shadows by layering tulle and created lines in his garments that were a reflection of an illustrator’s pen. He used colors rich and bold that blended into one another to provide depth and texture. How he envisioned this masterpiece was astounding. He enhanced the silhouettes and exaggerated the pieces to be walking images of illustrations. H&M is launching a plus size collection that’s only available online exclusively in Europe. The 20-piece collection includes skirts, cardigans, tops and lingerie in a 50s style theme. The one-shot one-collection will be available online at the beginning of March. The sizes are expected to run 8-24. The only problem here is that H&M online is only available to customers in Austria, Denmark, United Kingdom, The Netherlands, Finland, Germany, Norway and Sweden. So what happens to the other plus sized H&M lovers around the world? What about the US? Why can’t we also get in on the fun? Maybe H&M will realize the demand and make the plus size line available in stores around the world in the near future. A shopping, dining and entertainment complex has been created in Abu Dhabi. Gulf Related, a joint venture of Related Companies and Gulf Capital, along with Marvin Traub, the international retail consultant, are the masterminds behind what is now called The Galleria at Sowwah Square. Sowwah Square is a 5-million-square-foot-mixed-use project by Mubadala Development Co. that has been under construction for the past three years. Now The Galleria, 225,000 sq. ft. of retail space and 125,000 sq. ft. of restaurants, will be a major element of the area. Sowwah Square will also open Rosewood and Four Seasons hotels during fall 2012 and spring 2013. The architect for The Galleria is Elkus-Manfredi, who will build a waterfront level that’ll contain 50 luxury retailers. Valentino’s Couture spring 2011 collection has his name written all over it. Seems as if creative directors Pier Paolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiur plan for pure elegance worked. The collection, filled with nude dresses is chic, sophisticated and absolutely gorgeous. There are a few fire red pieces just to give a little spice, but they’re still complementary to the style of elegance. The collection is mostly dresses of maxi length and knee length, but there are a few pieces that are maxi length and knee length skirts matched with tops. There are also a few jackets that can be worn as dresses and are as stylish as the dresses themselves.
